Scientists at Pennsylvania State University have created a technology called “audio enclaves”—invisible sound zones where sound can be heard by only one person. The sound wave is transmitted using two ultrasonic emitters and a special 3D-printed metasurface, converging at a point and bending around obstacles.

The device is just 16 centimeters across and has already been tested on both mannequins and in real-world conditions. At present, sound can be directed up to one meter at a volume of about 60 decibels. The scientists plan to increase its range and power.

Imagine someone nearby nodding along to Metallica while you sit in complete silence and meditate peacefully—and neither of you disturbs the other!
