Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has developed a sunscreen gel based on flower pollen shells that is safe for skin and marine ecosystems. The cream is made from camellia and sunflower pollen using a gentle water-based method without harsh chemicals.

The new gel provides SPF 30 and protects against ultraviolet radiation while also reducing skin inflammation. The camellia-based gel showed better results and is suitable for sensitive skin, since this plant does not cause allergies. Beyond sun protection, the formula also helps cool the skin: surface temperature dropped by about 5 °C within 20 minutes after application.

Chemical ingredients in traditional sunscreens harm corals and marine life, disrupting ecosystems and threatening biodiversity. Because corals are critically important for ocean health and coastal economies, many countries have already restricted the use of such products. In this context, the pollen-based eco-cream looks like a promising alternative in the spirit of sustainable and safe cosmetics.
