Scientists at Kobe University have proposed a new way to remove yellow stains from clothing using blue LED light, which handles contamination better than hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet light.
The experiments were carried out on grease, sweat, and pigments from vegetables and fruits. Over the course of three hours, the LED lamps broke down the molecules of the contaminants with the help of oxygen from the air. Unlike ultraviolet light, the method did not leave new marks or damage the fabric. The technology was successfully tested on cotton, silk and polyester and was deemed environmentally safe.
If washing machine manufacturers take up the idea of the Japanese researchers, we could get this function within a few years. Clothes would stay bright white, the fabric would not be ruined, and the conscience would be clear — the environment would not suffer. That is the dream of anyone who has ever sent a favorite T-shirt into the category of 'home clothes'.
