King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Zahra Mansouri as Morocco’s prime minister. She became the first woman to hold the post in the country’s history and the second woman to head a government in the Arab world.

The 50-year-old Mansouri is a lawyer who has twice served as mayor of Marrakech and worked as minister of urban planning. Her party, PAM, came first in the parliamentary elections. She now has to form a coalition and put together a government.

Ahead lie the fight against inflation, higher wages, job creation and preparations for the 2030 World Cup. Whether the new government can bring tangible change to Moroccans’ daily lives will become clear as these plans are implemented.
