More than 40 years after the last motion sickness medications appeared in the United States, a fundamentally new drug — Nereus, developed by Vanda Pharmaceuticals — has been approved. The drug underwent three clinical studies, including in sea travel conditions, and proved highly effective in reducing vomiting episodes compared with placebo.
Unlike antihistamines, Nereus acts in a targeted way by blocking NK-1 receptors in the brain, which are responsible for sensing balance and triggering nausea. It does not suppress the entire nervous system and therefore almost does not cause side effects such as drowsiness, which makes it convenient for use while traveling.
The drug is expected to go on sale in the coming months. It is fair to say that travel, especially by sea, will now become much more pleasant for many people.
