The headquarters of the African Space Agency (AfSA) opened in Cairo. This makes Africa the fifth member of the global “space club” alongside NASA, the European Space Agency, Asia’s APSCO, and Latin America’s ALCE.
AfSA is the first centralized African institution to coordinate space-related activities and represent the interests of the entire continent at the international level. The agency will develop cooperation between countries, provide access to space data, and support research programs.
By advancing space research, Africa is not only opening up new economic and technology opportunities, but also helping address issues that are entirely “on the ground”: climate and agriculture monitoring, preventing disasters, and supporting education. The launch of AfSA is a contribution to a future in which African scientists are not just catching up with global progress, but helping create it with their own efforts.
