Italian researchers have developed a genetically modified “lunar rice” — a compact variety with a height of only 10 cm, suitable for growing in space and in closed systems. The approach makes it possible to maintain yields and features a higher protein content in the grains.

This development is the result of four years of joint work. To adapt rice to weightlessness, the plants were grown under conditions simulating microgravity by rotating them in all directions. An important step was increasing the proportion of protein in the grains, allowing future space crews to meet a greater share of their protein needs directly in orbit. Growing plants in missions also helps reduce stress and supports mental health during isolation.

Miniature rice varieties could be cultivated not only in future space missions, but also in remote or dry regions of Earth, and possibly even on one’s own balcony!
