For the first time in the world, cultivated salmon raised in a laboratory has been officially approved for sale. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued this historic authorization, confirming the safety and quality of the product developed by the startup Wildtype.
As a result, salmon obtained without fishing and slaughter became the first cultivated fish species in the world permitted for commercial sale. It is already on the menu at Kann restaurant in Portland, Oregon. In taste and composition, it is said to be identical to natural salmon, but also described as safe: it does not contain heavy metals, antibiotics, and does not pose a threat to wild fish populations.
Cultivated salmon is not just a technological novelty, but a response to global challenges. Population growth, depletion of ocean resources, and the need for sustainable sources of protein all require new approaches. And such products open the way to more eco-friendly, ethical, and tasty food for the future.
