In the US, two basal insulins have been approved for adults with type 2 diabetes — Awiqli from Novo Nordisk and Efsitora from Eli Lilly. The main advantage of both is that they can be injected just once a week instead of every day.
Clinical studies of both drugs showed that the weekly schedule can effectively control blood sugar levels. At the same time, the safety profile of the drugs was generally as expected for basal insulin therapy.
For someone who has lived with diabetes for years, the difference is significant: compared with daily injections, this regimen may eliminate more than 300 injections a year.
