In Beijing, the city hosted the first football match that can be described as a trial round of an AI World Cup. Four teams of humanoid robots took to the pitch, and each team was controlled by its own autonomous artificial intelligence. There were no people on the venue at all.
In three-on-three matches, the robots energetically tried to kick the ball, avoid falling, and interact with each other. It didn’t go perfectly, but for a first attempt it was more than decent. The key point is that the entire match served as training for the AI’s ability to make decisions in a dynamically changing environment. These skills are important for medicine, logistics, and industry. The machines learn to act collectively and in real time.
While they are still far from world championships, the Beijing experiment fits into a global trend: robots are no longer just executing pre-programmed actions. They are learning to understand, adapt, and interact.
