In the Indian city of Ambikapur, a unique cafe operates where plastic waste is accepted instead of money. One kilogram of plastic earns a meal, while half a kilo gets breakfast. The idea began in 2019 at the initiative of the municipal authorities: the goal was to fight hunger and pollution at the same time.

The cafe is funded from the sanitation department budget and feeds at least 20 people in need every day. The plastic is carefully sorted in 20 collection centers, where women sorters work. They process the waste into more than 60 categories and receive a stable income. The city has completely done away with its landfill: the site has been turned into a park, and the waste is now composted or used in industry. Ambikapur's experience is already being adopted by 48 districts in the state and even by other countries, including Cambodia.

The project has reduced the amount of waste by 2.5 times, created jobs, and raised awareness of recycling. Of course, one project like this will not solve the global plastic problem. But it sends an important signal: even local efforts can set off a wave of major change.
