Researchers at Anhui Agricultural University developed a composite based on bamboo waste. Its resistance to fracture increased by 173%, and the material can absorb electromagnetic interference. This could help protect smartphones, laptops and other electronics.
The development is based on bamboo biochar, produced by heating plant material without oxygen. The researchers treated the carbon particles and placed them between layers of two polymers, including biodegradable ones. This structure allows the material to absorb electromagnetic waves rather than simply reflect them.
In laboratory tests, the composite reduced interference almost five times more effectively than plastic containing the same amount of filler but lacking the layered structure.
