Yamaha has introduced the updated 2026 Yamaha Tricity 300 — and it is a genuinely notable step forward for the entire urban mobility industry. For the first time in a production scooter, a full airbag has been fitted to protect the rider in frontal collisions. It was developed together with Autoliv, one of the world leaders in automotive safety systems.

The airbag is located in the front section of the body and is triggered by rapid deceleration detected by two G-sensors. In the event of an accident, it deploys upward, reducing the risk of impact with the handlebars. The manufacturer notes that the system does not work in all scenarios — for example, it may not deploy in side impacts or falls. But even with that limitation, the appearance of such a system is a serious step: it concerns the reduction of one of the most dangerous scenarios for the rider.

The motorcycle industry has long been looking for ways to improve safety without sacrificing mobility and ease of handling. There have been attempts to introduce airbags in heavy touring motorcycles, but compact scooters had remained outside the picture until now. Yamaha is effectively bringing automotive safety thinking into the urban transport segment — and, most importantly, doing so in a mass-market product rather than a niche model.
