For the first time, a Russian basketball player entered the NBA draft top 10. Nineteen-year-old Yegor Demin was selected by the Brooklyn Nets with the eighth overall pick. This is not only a personal win, but also a landmark moment for Russian sport: until Demin, no Russian players had been in the coveted top 10. Over the past 11 years, Russian athletes had not appeared on the NBA clubs’ radar at this level.

Demin’s path began in Russia, where he was coached by his father. He then played for Real Madrid, and in 2024 continued his career in the United States, where he quickly made ESPN’s list of promising rookies.

The NBA draft is an annual event where clubs choose 60 of the best young players from around the world. Being picked in the top 10 gives unique opportunities: teams consider such a player as a foundation for their future roster and as a future star of the league, and it can also open up investments, new partnerships, and attention from the entire global basketball community.
