Bears, deer and pronghorn are already using a new wildlife overpass in Colorado. It helps animals move safely between natural areas without entering the roadway.
The Greenland Wildlife Overpass is the largest wildlife overpass in North America. It is about 61 meters wide and covers nearly 3,900 square meters. The spacious structure was designed with the habits of animals that prefer open spaces in mind.
The structure is complemented by five underpasses and a system of fencing. This infrastructure has made it possible to reduce the number of vehicle collisions with wild animals by 91%. It is an important step toward making roads safer not only for people, but also for wildlife.
