In China, scientists have discovered a new species of dinosaur that lived about 125 million years ago. In appearance, it looked like something between a modern bear and a bird of prey — which is why these ancient animals are already being called “feathered bears.”
Kayrasaurus changliensis reached 3.5 meters in length and weighed more than 270 kg. Its forelimbs had enormous claws, and one of them was held up in a rather aristocratic fashion. This kind of limb structure had not previously been found in therizinosaurs.
Its teeth are no less intriguing: more than 32 in the upper jaw and about 45 in the lower jaw — a record for known members of this group. The discovery shows how strange dinosaurs could be, having once been carnivores and later adapting to plant food.
