The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Simtriyo (centanafadine) for the treatment of ADHD in adults and children aged 6 and older. It is the first drug in a new class to receive such approval.

What makes it different? Let’s take a closer look. Simtriyo has a triple mechanism of action: one substance simultaneously affects the dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin systems. Until now, ADHD medications have mainly acted on the first two, so adding the serotonin system within a single drug is the main difference in this new approach.

It could become another option for people for whom standard stimulants are not suitable or do not help enough. In clinical trials, symptom improvement was observed as early as the first week of treatment.

It seems that a new reference point has emerged in ADHD treatment: it is now possible to target three brain systems at once.
