From 20 June 2025, new requirements for smartphones and tablets will take effect in the European Union. On the devices, special labels will be added with information on energy efficiency, the expected duration of battery operation, resistance to damage, and repairability.
The regulations oblige manufacturers to build batteries that last longer (at least 800 charge cycles), to make key spare parts available for 7 years after sales of the specific model end, and to provide professional repairers with access to the necessary software.
The change is expected to significantly extend the service life of devices and reduce the volume of electronic waste. According to the EU, this can mean fewer new purchases of devices and save roughly 20 billion euros by 2030. It is the first time that an official repairability scale is introduced for these kinds of products, giving buyers additional transparency when choosing equipment.
The new requirements are expected not only to reduce environmental pressure, but also to make the smartphone and tablet market more accountable to consumer and environmental interests.
