A first-of-its-kind successful experiment on the Scottish island of Eday has combined three key green technologies: tidal energy, long-duration batteries and hydrogen production. The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) tested a system in which a turbine from Orbital Marine Power, vanadium batteries from Invinity Energy Systems and an electrolyser from ITM Power work as a single energy block.

The system makes it possible to use surplus wave energy efficiently: it is stored in batteries or used to produce hydrogen. When there is not enough energy, the batteries continue to power the electrolyser, ensuring process stability.

The project is part of the European ITEG initiative aimed at developing sustainable energy. It is a step toward sustainable, reliable hydrogen production regardless of weather conditions.
