We continue the story of the prize winners and their unusual research.
Physics. Scientists from the University of Waterloo used physics and differential equations to try to design a urinal that prevents splashing. If the stream hits at an angle of less than 30 degrees, splashing drops sharply. The researchers then came up with a design that also helps those who are not very confident in their aim.
Biology. Scientists in Brazil studied which parts of venomous snakes’ bodies most often provoke a defensive bite. To do this, they carefully stepped on different parts of the reptiles’ bodies. However, the work was later retracted because it lacked the necessary ethical approval. So there is a prize, but the experiment should not be repeated.
Peace Prize. Psychologists found that friends are sometimes especially dear to us when they are willing to be tougher toward people we do not like. In other words, friendship is not only about support, but also about being willing to share someone else’s dislike.
Once again, the Ig Nobel Prize reminds us: a strange question can sometimes lead to perfectly serious science.
