Students at Sechenov University have created Russia’s first chewing gum with probiotics and prebiotics. The new product, called Reterix, is intended not only to freshen breath, but also to help prevent tooth decay, gingivitis and gum inflammation.

The gum’s main feature is its composition: it contains probiotics, or beneficial microorganisms, and prebiotics, which provide a growth medium for them. This combination supports the balance of the oral microbiome, reducing the risk of dental problems.

The project was developed as part of a research practicum: the students independently went through the entire process from idea to production and packaging. Special attention was paid to the product’s quality and texture so that it would be no worse than global brands.

Today, chewing gums are not only used to freshen breath, but are also becoming full-fledged functional products: from preventing cavities to fighting viruses. What once required tablets or special procedures can now be built into a chewing gum.
