On the northern side of Brooklyn, the startup Monumental Labs has brought artificial intelligence and robotics together to give new life to the ancient art of stone carving. Over two years, the team has created a factory where robots carve intricate sculptures, architectural facades and decorative elements from marble with a level of precision once available only to the finest masters of the past.
The process — from digital design to production — is fully automated, but it does not exclude human involvement: designers set the form and style, and AI precisely carries out the concept. The essence of the project is to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern digital tools.
The startup has already raised $8 million in investment and is aiming for the next step — building entire structures out of stone with the help of AI. Monumental Labs can provide every architect with a personal assistant — modest and silent, but capable of carving a cathedral facade overnight.
