The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has unveiled a prototype modular robot capable of carrying out a wide range of tasks in the exploration of the Moon and Mars. Different modules can be attached to the universal rover, from scientific instruments to construction equipment and power sources.
The key idea is a standardized connector that reliably links the rover to an additional module and transfers electricity and fluids. This system allows one robot to serve at the same time as an explorer, a transporter and a builder.
Particular attention has been given to a unique hybrid mobility system: the robot uses long articulated legs with wheels at the ends. This design combines speed and stability, allowing the machine to move confidently over rough terrain and maneuver while carrying a load.
The future lunar-orbiting Lunar Gateway station is also being built on the principle of modularity, with modules created by different countries and organizations. Although the launch of such rovers is not yet planned, the German project already offers concrete engineering solutions for future missions.
