Researchers have presented the world’s first universal operating system for quantum computers—QNodeOS. Its key feature is the ability to network devices that rely on different physical principles, such as ions and diamonds. Previously, such machines could not interact with one another because they required device-specific software.

QNodeOS uses a special driver that translates universal commands into a format understood by a particular device. This addresses one of the major problems on the path to building a quantum internet.

In the experiment, three different quantum computers were connected into a single network and successfully performed a test task. The next step is to scale the technology and connect more devices over longer distances.

The development may become a foundation for a full-fledged quantum internet and could play an important role in standardizing quantum systems.
