Magnus Carlsen, the chess legend and current world champion, has unveiled a new format for chess tournaments — the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour, where the pieces are placed randomly at the start of the game. This setup calls for players to adapt quickly to new conditions and to think beyond standard patterns. The idea is inspired by the Chess960 format and is intended to increase the sport’s appeal and interest.

The first tournament took place in Germany, on the Baltic coast, and brought together ten of the top grandmasters. In addition to the unconventional starting positions, spectators could also see reality-show elements, including heart-rate monitors and interviews during the games.

The project is described as an answer to the growing interest in chess among young people. The new format is meant to make the game more accessible and engaging for a broader audience, breaking down the stereotype of chess as “boring.”
