A team of engineers led by Wenjie Li and Beda Paudel has developed a compact thermoelectric generator that converts the heat of exhaust gases into electricity. The invention is based on a bismuth telluride semiconductor that generates current thanks to the temperature difference between two sides of the device.
The generator is capable of producing up to 146 W—enough to charge electronics or provide lighting. It does not require additional cooling and can be easily integrated into existing exhaust systems for transport, including cars, helicopters, and drones. This solution allows for efficient use of up to 75% of energy that is usually lost as heat, which contributes to fuel savings and lower emissions.
Without major changes and additional costs for infrastructure, any vehicle can be made slightly more “green” and efficient.
