Researchers from California have developed a neuroprosthesis that allows people with severe speech impairments to communicate again. The device converts brain activity into speech in 80 milliseconds, enabling nearly synchronous transfer of thoughts into words.

The technology has already been tested successfully on a 47-year-old woman who lost her speech after a stroke. With the help of the neuroprosthesis, she reached a communication speed of up to 90 words per minute—close to normal speech and many times faster than previous systems.

The approach is based on implanted electrodes that record neural signals. These signals are then processed immediately by algorithms and converted into text or synthesized speech.
