American company Diaper Stork, based in Seattle, has found an eco-friendly answer to the problem of disposable diapers. Led by Carrie Pollack, a former Amazon manager, the firm offers a subscription for reusable and compostable diapers with take-back disposal.

Its latest development is turning compostable diapers into biochar, which can be used as fertilizer and a water filter. In the pilot center, the diapers are mixed with coffee husks and processed within a day without methane emissions.

An estimated 90 billion diapers are thrown away worldwide every year. Since launch, the company says it has kept more than 3.3 million diapers out of landfills — a tangible contribution to environmental protection. The project has received support from Washington state authorities. Because the technology is compact, processing can be carried out near residential areas, reducing transport costs and the carbon footprint.
