In the Indian state of Kerala, a carpenter named Saajee Valasseri opened a free river swimming club after a personal tragedy: in 2009, 15 children died when a boat wrecked.

The initiative began by teaching his own children, and then grew into a mass effort. More than 10,000 people have already learned here how to keep themselves safe in the water.

The club is not focused on sport. Through 16 lessons on open water, students learn to overcome fear and learn how to deal with currents. Classes are held for all ages and abilities, including older people and people with disabilities. Children are supervised by adults, and former students become mentors.

Today, the club has inspired neighboring villages, and its students set records. But the main change is that people in southern India feel more confident around water. The project shows how a simple initiative can change an entire community.
