Researchers at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City found a simple way to quickly calm hospitalized patients: just 20 minutes under a weighted blanket reduced anxiety by an average of 3.6 points out of 10. For inpatient care, this is especially interesting because the method does not require medication or complex equipment.
The study involved 54 patients, who alternated between using a regular blanket and a 6.75 kg weighted blanket. More than 80% described it as calming. The effect is thought to be linked to even deep pressure on the body.
The result builds on earlier studies of weighted blankets. For example, a 2024 Chinese study looked at their use for insomnia in adults over several weeks and found improved sleep, as well as reduced anxiety and stress. The new study suggests a similar effect may appear much faster — within just 20 minutes.
