In the UK, a child has been born for the first time following a uterine transplant. Grace Davidson, 36, became a mother thanks to a donation from her sister. The girl was born two months ago and is reported to be doing well.

As a teenager, Grace was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition known as Rokitansky syndrome (MRKH). There are around 2 million women worldwide with similar conditions. With surgery and IVF, she was able to carry and give birth to a child.

This is the first such case in the country and a significant step in the development of British transplant medicine.

The UK has now joined seven countries worldwide where childbirth after a uterine transplant is possible. The technology has been developing relatively recently, with the first successful births in Sweden in 2014. Over the past 10 years, it has provided many women with congenital anomalies the chance to experience motherhood.
