Spotify will begin marking AI artists next month with a special AI persona label. It will appear on the artist’s profile and next to their tracks in playlists. Such projects will also stop appearing in personalized algorithmic recommendations by default.
The goal of the update is to make the origin of AI music clear to listeners and to avoid placing artificial projects on the same level as real musicians in algorithmic promotion. The platform will identify such projects not only through voluntary information from authors, but also with human review and special tools.
The decision comes amid rapid growth in synthetic content. Over the past 12 months, the platform removed 75 million spam tracks, while its entire catalog contains about 100 million tracks. In effect, Spotify is introducing a new principle of transparency: listeners should understand not only what they are hearing, but who is behind the music — especially if such a project can appear in algorithmic recommendations.
