An international team of scientists has presented a science-based scenario showing that eliminating global poverty and meeting the climate goals of the Paris Agreement are achievable.

The study used the DESIRE model, taking into account how much energy is truly required to provide basic conditions for a decent life: from heating, electricity and transport to internet access, education and medical care. It turned out that minimal human needs are much more modest: meeting all basic conditions would require only one third of current global energy consumption. The other two thirds are used for excessive and inefficient spending.

The research suggests that if countries actively adopt energy-efficient technologies, allocate resources sensibly, and invest in reducing inequality, then within 20 years the share of people experiencing energy shortages could fall by more than 90%.

The study challenges the idea that protecting the planet inevitably conflicts with improving people’s well-being. Instead, sustainable resource allocation can improve the lives of billions without harming the environment.
