According to Gallup's latest global survey, in 2024, 73% of adults around the world said they felt safe walking alone at night. This is the highest figure on record since 2006 and 13% higher than ten years ago.
The study included more than 145,000 people in 144 countries. The positive trend is especially noticeable in Asia, Western Europe, Latin America, and the post-Soviet region, where perceived safety has nearly doubled over the past 17 years. The highest levels were recorded in the Gulf countries, while Singapore again emerged as the clear leader: 98% of residents are confident in their safety at night.
Significant differences remain: on average, women feel safe 11% less often than men, and the gap is even wider in some countries. South Africa remains the least safe country in terms of public perception — only 33% of respondents feel protected. Still, this report is more than statistics. It is evidence that even in difficult times, progress is possible.
