Surgeons from the University of California, Los Angeles, made the world’s first successful bladder transplant. The surgery followed four years of preparation and was performed on a patient who had lost the organ due to a tumor and suffered from kidney failure. In an eight-hour procedure, the team transplanted the bladder and the donor kidney.
The team led by Dr. Nima Nassiri and Dr. Inderbir Gill used a unique technique for connecting the organs. Immediately after the operation was completed, the organs began to function.
Before this, a bladder transplant had never been performed because the procedure is extremely complex due to the abundance of blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis, as well as technical difficulties. This case became a breakthrough not only in surgery, but also in the treatment of urological conditions, opening the way to new possibilities for restoring quality of life.
