Across all countries, Nepal saw the highest growth rate in electric-vehicle imports: in 2023–2024, the figure increased by 189%, from 4,050 to 11,701 vehicles. This is one of the most rapid jumps in the EV segment’s history.

The reasons are straightforward. Kathmandu is among the most polluted cities in the world, and the government is betting on a shift to electric transport. The plan is that by 2030, 90% of private cars and 60% of public transport should be electric.

Thanks to clean hydropower and tax incentives, electric vehicles in Nepal are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective. In the first part of 2024–2025, which was not yet a full year, 13,483 vehicles had already been imported, and growth continues. Against the backdrop of much more modest rates in China, the United States, and the EU, Nepal is becoming an unexpected leader in changes to the sector.
