Scientists have developed an eco-friendly detergent based on wood fibers and the corn protein zein. The new formula uses natural, renewable ingredients — cellulose nanofibers and zein — that effectively remove difficult stains, including grease and stains from ink and sauces.

Thanks to Pickering emulsion technology, the detergent particles form a stable film, which enhances its performance at the water–oil interface. This allows it to handle greasy stains effectively while remaining safe for the environment.

Tests have shown that in a number of cases the new detergent outperforms synthetic alternatives in effectiveness without damaging fabrics. Its ingredients are non-toxic and easier to process, which reduces pressure on aquatic ecosystems. In addition, the natural origin of the ingredients makes production potentially cheaper. And given the scale of water pollution caused by household chemicals, any replacement for synthetic products is already a major contribution.
