For the first time in history, renewable energy has overtaken coal in global electricity generation. The main contribution came from solar power plants, which covered 83% of global growth in electricity demand in the first half of 2025, and from wind power, which increased generation by more than 7%.

The transition to green energy is especially active in Asia. China installed more new solar and wind capacity in six months than all other countries combined, while cutting coal use by 2%. India tripled its clean energy generation, reducing coal consumption by 3.1% and gas use by 34%.

According to the International Energy Agency, renewable energy could double by the end of the decade, with solar power becoming the main driver of change. Although the US and Europe saw increased coal and gas use because of weather and economic fluctuations, it is the current shift to clean electricity that is setting a positive direction.
