China reported record greening results: in 2024, 7.67 million hectares of forests and natural areas were created and restored. Of this total, 4.446 million hectares were new forests, exceeding last year’s figures. More than 3.2 million hectares of grasslands and nearly 2.8 million hectares of sandy and rocky land were also restored.
Today, forests cover more than a quarter of China’s territory, and timber volume has exceeded 20 billion cubic meters. In addition to natural areas, cities and highways are also being greened: more than 6,200 mini-parks have been created, along with over 7,300 km of urban green belts and 50,000 km of greened roads.
Given that global net forest gain, after accounting for logging and degradation, has remained relatively small in recent years — about 6.78 million hectares per year — the addition of millions of hectares represents a significant contribution to global forest growth.
