The packaging deposit return system (DRS), in which shoppers get their deposit back when they return a bottle or can, is becoming one of the most effective solutions for reducing waste. In countries where it has been introduced, recycling rates have risen to impressive levels.

Germany remains the leader, with more than 98% of beverage containers returned there. Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden also show return rates of 90% to 96%. Lithuania reached 90% in less than two years after launching the system.

Romania has now joined that list. After the launch of its new return scheme in 2023, the country reached a 94% return rate for bottles and cans. Over two years, residents returned 7.5 billion pieces of packaging, including 4 billion PET bottles.

The secret to DRS success is the combination of convenience and financial incentive. Return points are located near stores, and the deposit is refunded immediately. Businesses are also compensated for the costs of taking part in the program. As a result, everyone benefits: the environment sees less waste, the economy gains secondary raw materials, and consumers feel they are taking part in something important.
