An international team of scientists from Austria, Ireland and Germany has published a broad meta-analysis showing that simply viewing works of art has a positive effect on a person’s mental state. The study covers data from 38 scientific papers involving nearly 7,000 people.
Interaction with art contributes to eudaimonic well-being — that is, it helps people become more aware of the meaning of life, feel personal growth and inner wholeness. And the most interesting part is that this effect appears regardless of place and format: a painting in a museum, a reproduction in an office, a sculpture in a park, or even a digital image on a screen — all of it works.
The report is especially valuable because it is the first to systematize the accumulated knowledge and provide a coherent overall picture. Art should be seen as an important and accessible tool for supporting mental health. Of course, paintings will not replace a therapist or medication, but they can be a wonderful and safe supplement.
