The first turbine of the offshore wind farm He Dreiht, developed by the German company EnBW, has been installed and brought into operation in the North Sea. This is the first step toward creating one of the largest wind farms in Europe — with a total capacity of nearly 1 gigawatt.

Each of the 64 turbines will produce 15 megawatts, enough for one rotation of the blades to supply an average home with energy for a day.

The project is notable for being carried out entirely without government subsidies. A private consortium — Allianz, AIP, and Norges Bank — holds 49.9% of it, while EnBW holds the rest. The wind farm will be able to supply electricity to 1.1 million homes, making it an important contribution to Germany’s green transition.

He Dreiht is one of the first examples of a large-scale shift to renewable energy driven by the private sector.
