The European Environment Agency (EEA) has recorded steady and impressive progress by the European Union in tackling air pollution. Over the past 18 years, emissions across all key categories of air pollutants have fallen markedly, and in some areas they have reached historic lows.

The most striking reduction is seen in emissions of sulfur compounds (SOx), which have decreased by 84%. These compounds play a key role in the formation of acid rain and are harmful to health. Their reduction means a tangible improvement in the environmental situation in cities and rural areas. Positive dynamics are also noted for other pollutants.

These results became possible thanks to a comprehensive EU approach: an active transition to environmentally friendly transport, the introduction of modern pollution-control technologies, tougher standards for industrial plants, and the expansion of programs for “green” energy. Especially important is that emissions reductions are not just continuing steadily, but in some areas are even picking up speed.
