Results of a long-term clinical study showed that the experimental drug gantenerumab can reduce the risk of developing early-onset Alzheimer’s disease by 50% in people with a genetic predisposition.
The study involved 73 people with inherited mutations. After eight years of treatment, half of the participants had not developed symptoms by the age at which they were expected to, although they had initially been considered certain to develop the disease.
The success of this study opens up prospects for developing preventive treatments for Alzheimer’s disease on a broader scale.
